Bear Grylls, the Hollywood survival TV show persona from the Discovery network, has teamed up with Gerber Legendary Blades to make a series of survival knives and tools.

The most advertised product in the Bear Grylls Survival Series is the Bear Grylls Ultimate Knife. The fixed- blade knife comes with a variation of additional perks to make the best use of its resourcefulness.

These add-ons include a fire starter, a whistle, a knife sharpener, a sheath, and a small survival guide.

Below is my review of this product.

Quality

To being with, let’s take a look at the money maker, the blade. It is a serrated fixed blade with a full tang, for knife newbies, which essentially means that the blade doesn’t stop at the handle, but it continues under the handle the full length of the knife. This, in essence, makes for a much sturdier knife. You will very seldom see a break at the handle such as in the cheaper quality knives.

The handle has a great ergonomic shape which fits in your hand comfortably and comes with a double guard in order to avoid slippage.

The textured rubber grip is sticky, even in moist/wet conditions, which is also an added bonus. Overall, it really is a pretty nice knife.

According to Gerber, the blade is high carbon stainless steel measuring in at a little under 4.8-inches, and the spinge is almost 1/4 inch thick, which is not bad at all for a price we’ll I will get to shortly.

The knife is made of carbon steel, which is known for its good edges and hardness with stainless steel so you avoid the staining that is prone to happen to plain carbon knives. The blade will be resistant to rust while maintaining its edge and hardness.

With respect to statistics to back up its claims, the Grylls Survival Knife has scored a respectable Rockwell score of 55-59 (57+/-2).

Apart from the blade, the spark emitting tool and whistle are good quality.

Usefulness

The Ultimate Survival Knife from Gerber can provide what many others don’t, which is a wide variety of uses due to the add-ons to the sheath and knife lanyard. The sheath contains a fire starter, a knife sharpener, and survival guide booklet, while the lanyard, attached to the bottom of the knife, has a whistle. Another attention-grabbing addition are the two holes at the top of the handle which permit you to lash the knife and make a spear.

So basically I would have to say that I was able to start a fire quickly with a little dryer lint, and the sharpener did a great job of bringing the knife back to its original sharpness after putting it through its paces. So, all of the items worked well on their own and would also be decent stand-alone items to pack. The fire starter was my favorite add-on feature.

Assessment

The Bear Grylls Ultimate Knife is a good product at a fair price. When you compare it against other survival knives, at a retail price of $62.00, you can get some pretty high quality knives, but they won’t come with the added features. If you really value the fire starter, knife sharpener, and whistle, and feel that those are important, then this survival tool is going to get a 5-star value rating.

Warranty

So let’s take a look at the warranty now. Gerber gives you a limited lifetime warranty and a 1 year warranty on its Bear Gryll line of products. If your device fails in any way and was used in a normal manner, they will fix it or replace it for the life of the product. From what I know about Gerber, they are really good at honoring their warranty.

Typically, if a company has a good warranty, it’s because they make good products. This history of Gerber has proved, even with this line of products, that if they find problems – they correct them.

Performance

I completed an assortment of tests when I first received the knife, and here is how the it performed:

1. I hammered nails into plywood with the butt of the knife. The retail packaging demonstrates putting the knife into its sheath and using it as a hammer so that’s exactly what I did. Amazingly, it worked quite well.

2. I carve up kindling wood. I needed to test the fire starter so I built a fire. I had a tiny amount of dryer lint to help get it going but ended up needing some kindling to help get it started.

3. I sparked a fire. The Bear Grylls Ultimate Survival knife did a great job at throwing some serious sparks toward the fire. The special section on the back of the blade was a perfect match to ferro rod resulting in very nice sized sparks. This set up worked better than some other stand-alone fire starters and, I was really impressed.

4. The whistle. Finally, the whistle passed that test and it kept its loudness level up to about 50 yards before starting to fade away.

Hot Survival Conclusion

This Bear Grylls Ultimate Knife review provided me with some nice surprises. There is a lot to like with it. In fact, I would highly recommend it in its price range, especially if you like the fact that it comes with the extra features.
